The Gairloch Museum Roundhouse

Gairloch Museum will construct a full-scale replica of an Iron Age roundhouse within its existing and well-visited Outdoor Museum, directly informed by archaeological evidence from the well-preserved Achtercairn sites on the hillside directly behind the Museum. The project will create an educational and interpretive structure that brings prehistoric life in Wester Ross into tangible form. The project has four key aims: 1. To give physical form to the archaeological record and interpret the findings of five community digs since 2012. 2. To enhance the Museum’s capacity to deliver immersive, curriculum-linked experiences for nurseries, schools, and families. 3. To support the revival and sustainability of local construction techniques including turf building, timber framing, heather thatching, and drystone walling. 4. To increase visitor footfall and dwell-time in Gairloch, supporting regeneration goals and the Museum’s long-term sustainability.
