IWM is preparing to lead Britain’s Second World War centenary commemorations and IWM Duxford - the UK’s best preserved WW2 airbase - is the place where human endeavour and innovation changed the course of world history. WW2 had an unparalleled global and political impact, and ushered in a period of extraordinary peace. Recent events have seen the stability of that peace unravel, making understanding the causes and impact of WW2 more important and relevant than ever. ‘The Second World War - Stories for a New Generation’ is the centrepiece of our Transforming IWMD Masterplan, delivering a new permanent exhibition in hangars used in WW2, to tell compelling, engaging, human-centred stories that inspire new generations, underpinned by inclusive programming with Youth Volunteers and Young Producers. Essential conservation works to the Grade II* listed hangars will increase environmental sustainability and climate change resilience.
