The Tomb of the Eagles

With your assistance as a key partner, our community wishes to buy, secure and subsequently manage the Neolithic site popularly known as the Tomb of the Eagles (TotE), on South Ronaldsay, Orkney. Perhaps the most important and significant point to raise at the outset of this application is that this site is at risk. The site is for sale and may enter the open market unless the community succeeds in purchasing the asset. The site includes the chambered tomb, an excavated Bronze Age burnt mound, and a Visitor Centre which provides a focus for the site. In 2019 the site was enjoyed by 16,000 visitors. The Scottish Land Fund (SLF) advises that it is unaware of any other community that has acquired a scheduled ancient monument, so this is a unique opportunity. We would be grateful for NHLF assistance to secure the site’s speedy and safe reopening to the public.
