“Threads of Elegance” Conserving the Legacy of Beale and Inman Tailors

Westminster Archives holds the exceptional archives of Beale and Inman (ca.1828–1980), one of the West End's most renowned tailors. We aim to conserve seven volumes of textile samples in poor condition, while honouring their cultural significance by involving underrepresented community groups, teaching them new skills that might lead to job opportunities, creating an oral archive/film and digital resources, training volunteers and educate participants in fashion sustainability. Central to the project is a tailored learning experience for individuals with special educational needs (SEN), offering a taster career programme in textile industry. This would provide participants with multifaceted knowledge that may lead to career prospects, while developing essential skills, boosting confidence, encouraging social interaction and fostering lifelong learning. Accredited learning pathways on offer, may lead to formal qualifications or work placements. The project will culminate in exhibitions showcasing participants' newly acquired skills and their interpretation of the collection, to the wider community.
