Toys Hill is a small but active village in Kent with a strong tradition of community belonging. This cultural legacy is linked to a group of residents including Octavia Hill, Margaret Sewell and others who campaigned nationally for social reform. Their work for Toys Hill expressed the principles of the Kyrle Society, and early National Trust, ‘to make open spaces beautiful in as simple a way as possible’. The Cultural Heritage of Toys Hill is focussed around the Village Hall which was built by these same residents in 1910. As the last public village space, the project aims to celebrate this unique Grade II listed building and the community which cares for it. Through conservation of this Arts and Crafts Hall, increased access to the village archive and creation of a digital record of Toys Hill, both the tangible and intangible legacy of the village will be renewed and protected.
