Transform: a new vision for the collection gallery

‘Transform: a new vision for the collection gallery’ is a bold move to rethink the Design Museum’s collection and its display at a time of global societal, political and climate change. An expanded collection gallery will engage a wider public in the story of the impact of design – which helped to shape the 20th century as a creative discipline largely focused on commercial productivity. We now see design emerging as a tool to engage critically with the world, central in tackling climate change, pollution, deforestation, species extinction and the displacement of people. These themes, alongside a strong focus on broad representation and inclusion, will be explored in public through reframing our collection of largely industrially produced objects. New themes, perspectives and voices will provide new interpretations of our shared design heritage for future generations, inviting audiences to interrogate world views and preconceptions, as well as who and what is presented.
