Historic Buildings
Tyne Theatre & Opera House – Conservation for Community
The Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust owns the freehold of this grade I listed building for the sole purpose of restoring and maintaining it for the benefit of all. The building dates from 1867 and also includes the Westgate Music Hall which was added to the site in 1869. We will re-connect the two theatres in order to establish a significant enhanced programme which also caters for community and smaller scale events. The project will also create new jobs, establish a significant additional programme of events and secure the long-term sustainability of the whole site. The unique historic stage machinery will be fully restored in order to create the only fully working Victorian stage in the British Isles, and in doing so enhance its already growing international reputation for conservation and historic interpretation. Ultimately the building needs to be sustainable and engaged with the community long-term, saved for the nation and given the international recognition that it so richly deserves.
