Lambeth Palace Library is opening a new chapter in its history, and ‘Unfolding Time’ kickstarts our strategy to find new ways to invite new audiences into our new building. We will harness the captivating power of medieval concertina-fold almanacs: rare, colourful and puzzle-like objects that speak to an inherent human interest in conceptualising time. Drawing on new research, our free exhibition brings a selection together for the first time and, with our holdings, takes visitors on a journey through the medieval past, present and future. Activity packs, virtual tours, models and a full events programme will invite visitors—online and in-person—to play with these dynamic objects, encouraging reflection on methods of passing and marking time in their own communities, classrooms and households. Forming relationships with local schools and interfaith groups in particular, ‘Unfolding Time’ will establish the Library as a welcoming place where everyone can learn about the past.
