Unlocking the INQUEST Archive Memorialising Death and Resistance

INQUEST will foster engagement with its public archive at Bishopsgate Institute to explore deaths involving police, prisons and mental health settings in England and Scotland, since 1980. We will use co-productive practices, volunteer training programmes, photography and film, to look at this hidden part of our national heritage. We will support a network of bereaved families, heritage specialists and campaigners to commemorate those who have died in the care of the state care over the last 45 years. By the end of the project, the INQUEST archive will have regular users and its contents will have inspired a series of work/outputs: commemorative events, including hopefully, a capital works funding application, digital archive research guides, artist’s workshops, film screenings, exhibitions, podcast series and a further developed digital archive offering. We also will have drawn connections between England and Scotland’s heritage of resistance to state violence and the communities driving this forward.
