Historic Buildings
Walpole Old Chapel is Grade II* listed and one of the oldest Non-Conformist places of worship, still in use today for worship, celebration, performance and research. ‘Walpole Old Chapel Unwrapped’ will remove this remarkable building from the Heritage at Risk Register while enabling its transfer into secure community ownership. The external render of the Chapel is failing, placing it at great risk. This project will remove and replace the render, repair the timber frame and complete other essential conservation works. The repairs will be run alongside a programme of heritage skills activities to showcase and share traditional conservation techniques. In parallel, this project will support the Friends of Walpole Old Chapel (FWOC) to take ownership of the Chapel before the current owner closes operations and is forced to sell the building. The project will bolster FWOC’s organisational capacity and expand its audiences to take ownership of the Chapel sustainably.
