“We go on!”: Uncovering the UK's LGBTQ+ Publishing History

By cataloguing and creating space for public audiences to engage with the Haud Nominandum collection, Senate House Library will unlock a national treasure. Uncovering a unique part of the UK’s LGBTQ+ history, this project will make this nationally significant collection discoverable to the public, showcasing historical LGBTQ+ materials and sharing the radical stories of their creation, circulation and collection. This project will be deeply personal for many, but compelling for more: both amplifying the historically marginalised voices of LGBTQ+ communities and deepening wider audiences’ understanding of the UK’s queer history, as told through the lens of the flourishing world of LGBTQ+ publishing. Building skill and sharing learning, dedicated cataloguers will open up previously unknown links, literary works and life experiences. All this will be shared, with public catalogues, exhibitions and activities shaping the collection into a generative body of material: one sparking memories, conversations and curiosity on a national stage.
