Writing on the Wall: 25 Years of Creating Change Through the Power of Words

25 years ago, a group of writers, artists and activists, including Jimmy McGovern, had the vision to create a space for working class writers from diverse backgrounds to flourish, a place for communities to engage in discussion, debate and performance around issues of social justice, equality, diversity and inclusion. From a modest weeklong festival in June 2000, Writing on the Wall (WoW) has grown to deliver an annual month-long festival, Black History Month Festivals, and hundreds of community-based creative and heritage projects, launching the careers of many new, local artists and publishing the work of over 500 new writers. Our vision is to preserve that legacy, and, through preserving and celebrating our rich archive and unique contribution to creative activism and the region’s cultural landscape over the past 25 years, continue the work that has contributed to WoW becoming one of the most respected small arts organisations in the region.
