50 years of The Whitechapel Centre - ending homelessness for people in Liverpool

The Whitechapel Centre is a homelessness charity working across Liverpool city region. In 2025 we are marking our 50th Anniversary and want to use it as an opportunity to highlight the history of homelessness in the city. We want to explore how homelessness has changed, including the causes, language and support offered. We want to highlight how social, economic and political situations affect individual circumstances, and how homelessness services have adapted and changed over the decades. We will gather stories from people involved with the charity, either as a volunteer, staff member or used our services, to develop a social history. We will collate the stories and present them by video, audio, photographs and quotes. We will create a timeline of the charity’s activities with key socio-economic issues sitting alongside. It will be displayed in an exhibition at Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool, our website and in print.
