Culture And Memory
‘92-Years and Counting’ is a new project celebrating the heritage of Wigan Athletic Football Club. Developed in collaboration with partners specialising in education, health, community development, and heritage sectors and the club’s supporters’ group, the project will deliver inclusive, accessible opportunities through three-bespoke strands co-created during the consultation phase. A National Lottery Heritage Grant will be the catalyst for 750 children improving their knowledge and understanding of the club’s past, with more families, particularly from highly deprived neighbourhoods, accessing local heritage venues for the first time. It will empower fans to use their passion for the club to upskill as volunteers, working with peers to capture and preserve oral recollections for future generations to enjoy and learn from. Activities will connect and support those vulnerable and underrepresented in heritage activity, inspiring new friendships, access to community services, and opportunities to shape future delivery based on need, ideas, and lived experiences.
