Nature And Landscape

Afonydd Menai

This project aims to eradicate American mink from a large area of North Wales, building on successful efforts on Anglesey to protect the native water vole population. Previous work has included mink control on Anglesey and a buffer zone in North Gwynedd, alongside extensive habitat restoration and creation to connect isolated water vole populations. The new initiative will focus exclusively on the threat posed by American mink, expanding mink control efforts to completely eradicate this invasive predator from the region. By removing mink, we aim to facilitate the recovery and expansion of water voles, ensuring the resilience and long-term survival of this important species in North Wales. This will be done by working collaboratively to cover a broad region of North Wales. This is a critical step towards creating a mink-free GB, supporting the broader goal of water vole conservation and biodiversity enhancement across the area.
