Afro Heritage Project

The Afro Heritage Project seeks to uncover, preserve, and celebrate the migration stories and cultural heritage of African communities in Leicester from the 1940s to the present day. Led by Afro Innovation Group, this community-based initiative will record oral histories, gather photographs and artefacts, and create public exhibitions and digital resources that reflect the rich contributions of African individuals and families to the city’s identity. The project aims to increase access to underrepresented heritage, build intergenerational pride, and promote inclusion by embedding African voices into Leicester’s historical record. It will also provide heritage training and volunteer opportunities for local residents, particularly young people. The legacy will include a publicly accessible archive, long-term partnerships with local institutions, and sustained community engagement with African heritage. Ultimately, the Afro Heritage Project will ensure that these important stories are preserved, celebrated, and used to educate and inspire future generations.
