Ami Sylhoti Bangali (I am Sylheti Bengali)

Ami Sylhoti Bangali aims to reconnect younger generations of British Bangladeshis with their Sylheti heritage, celebrating identity while strengthening cultural understanding and cohesion. With over 45 years of dedicated community work, the Bangladesh Youth League (BYL) has a deep-rooted commitment to heritage. Feedback from our beneficiaries clearly highlights a growing disconnection from cultural roots, especially among 2nd and 3rd generation British Bangladeshis. This project responds to those concerns by preserving rich aspects of Sylheti heritage currently at risk of being lost—including the Sylheti language (both spoken and Sylheti Nagri script), folk music, oral histories, migration stories, traditional dress and crafts, culinary distinction, religious and spiritual practices, and community values and structures. Through a Virtual Museum and regional exhibitions, performances, and workshops across Luton, Bedford, Milton Keynes, Northampton and St Albans, we will train young volunteers and engage communities to create an inclusive, lasting legacy rooted in shared heritage and pride.
