Culture And Memory
Arts & Activism at the Heart of the Coalfield brings together different generations of the community in Ystradgynlais to explore and enjoy their heritage through intergenerational digital learning, oral history, banner-making and community celebration. Young people will gain skills in digital storytelling and stitch whilst working with community members with lived experience of the coal industry. This will lead to the creation of a digital memory archive, new procession banners inspired by colliery lodge banners and a greater understanding between generations of our shared heritage. The rich coalfield and community memories will be made available digitally via an online archive on The Welfare ’s website, physically at the South Wales Miners’ Library, and as part of the People’s Collection Wales. The project follows a pilot Autumn Rising festival in Oct-Nov 2024 which included a community sharing day and will form part of 2025 Autumn Rising Festival.
