Athelney, Alfred and England

Through the Athelney, Alfred and England project we are seeking to secure in public ownership one of the most significant sites in the early history of the English nation. Public access to, participation in, and appreciation of the Isle of Athelney and its rich heritage will be secured and enhanced for current and future generations. A public engagement programme co-created with local people, groups, schools and other organisations will widen access and opportunity for people to engage with and experience the site, both in person and remotely through new digital resources. The project will enable us to improve our organisational sustainability by increasing technical resilience within our landscape sites management team, which will not only maximise both heritage and wildlife interests on this site but also support the efficient management of the rest of the Trust’s estate portfolio that is open for public access. The project will also enable us to understand more about the audiences which use our heritage landscape sites and thus enable us to better understand and demonstrate the impact and value of our work.
