Beacon Lagoons Little Tern Protection Project

Our project aims to secure three years of dedicated protection for the Little Tern colony at the Lagoons SSSI in Kilnsea, one of the most successful beach-nesting sites in the United Kingdom. We seek £100,000 to fund essential wardening, monitoring, predator management, visitor engagement and scientific work that ensures the long-term viability of this vulnerable species. The project will provide continuous seasonal coverage, allowing us to record productivity, safeguard nests and respond rapidly to threats such as disturbance, predation and extreme weather. A further £10,000 will support targeted habitat management on SBOT-owned land and the leased SSSI plot, improving nesting substrate, maintaining access infrastructure and enhancing climate resilience. Over three years, we aim to maintain high breeding success, strengthen long-term datasets, involve volunteers in specialist conservation skills and support community understanding of coastal wildlife. This investment will secure stable, effective protection for a nationally important colony.
