Beyond the Try Line – Celebrating Community Heritage in Rugby

In 2025, the British Asian Rugby Association C.I.C (BARA) celebrates 20 years of promoting equality and inclusion in rugby. Established in Bradford in 2004, with backing from local councils and national sporting bodies, BARA has worked to break cultural and religious barriers, increasing South Asian participation in rugby league and union. This project honours the pioneers—men and women—who challenged the norms of a predominantly white sport. By sharing their stories, we aim to highlight their contributions to rugby and the wider push for diversity and representation. Aligned with Bradford’s status as UK City of Culture 2025, the project will showcase BARA’s legacy through events and educational initiatives across West Yorkshire. By documenting this history, we not only celebrate past achievements but also inspire future generations to continue building an inclusive future for rugby and sport in general. It’s a tribute to resilience, representation, and lasting change.
