Black History in Camberwell and the Legacies of Enslavement

An exhibition in a box for school pupils and Southwark residents to explore black british history and local historical legacies of Britain’s involvement with the slave trade and enslavement. It links to the planned installation of Sokari Douglas Camp’s sculpture ‘All the World is Now Richer’ in Burgess Park,Southwark, London. In the artist’s words the work shows ‘people of slave heritage are brave and have dignity and strength’. The project builds on new research about ‘Camberwell and the History of Enslavement’ which shows the far-reaching consequences of enslaving people for Camberwell and Southwark. This history, and its legacies, remain poorly understood. The Southwark Schools Learning Partnership (SSLP - https://sslp.education/) of 18 secondary schools are keen to actively engage with this relevant local history. The Camberwell Society, the local amenity society which published the research will use the exhibition to engage members and community organisations.
