Culture And Memory

Botanical Colour -- The Redpath Way

A community-engaged cultural heritage project that celebrates, preserves, and enables public access to the unique natural dye recipe archive of Margaret and David Redpath – a Pembrokeshire couple and the last owners of Wallis Woollen Mill (Ambleston, Pembrokeshire) – whose pioneering experiments in botanical dyeing placed them as world-leading authorities. We will capture the rich legacy of the Redpaths’ work and celebrate Welsh heritage, engaging a large audience through digital outputs. We will empower volunteers to construct a comprehensive reminiscence archive and to recreate and document hundreds of botanical dye recipes meticulously recorded by the Redpaths, ensuring the preservation and dissemination of their invaluable knowledge to benefit the wider community, whilst informing and inspiring environmental sustainability within the textiles sector. The project offers multiple avenues for community participation, including volunteer opportunities, educational initiatives in schools, community workshops, engaging exhibitions and talks, a project publication, and a documentary film.
