Culture And Memory

Breaking Boundaries: Hidden Histories of Women’s Rugby in the South & South West

Our vision is to shine a light on the women whose passion, resilience and determination shaped rugby in the South and South West long before the women’s game gained national recognition. Much of this history has never been formally recorded. Stories survive only in personal memories, forgotten photographs and scattered community archives. Through this project, we aim to uncover these hidden histories by working directly with volunteers, young people, clubs and former players. By equipping communities with heritage skills, we will empower them to preserve their own past while building pride in the region’s contribution to the Red Roses and the modern game. The project will culminate in a touring exhibition across major clubs and a permanent online archive, ensuring this heritage is accessible, celebrated and never lost again. We want future generations to know the women who came before them, and to feel inspired by their courage and impact.
