Culture And Memory
This project aims to bring together girls and young women from diverse backgrounds to work on a project looking at their Somali heritage. They will undertake research and a creative project that will include researching and recording Somali women's heritage, traditions and culture, and then using this to write, produce and perform a play. The play will explore parallel experiences of growing up as a teenager in the UK and in Somaliland, offering insights into cultures, values and challenges. Through interviewing their mothers and older women within the community, the girls will gain a deeper perspective on the lives of previous generations. They will craft costumes, create a set, learn traditional dance, and build a creative narrative that bridges the gap between these two worlds, fostering understanding, dialogue and cultural pride.
