Culture And Memory
Camlas: Ein Llwybr, Ein Llais / Our Path, Our Voice
Through Camlas: Ein Llwybr, Ein Llais/Our Path, Our Voice, we aim to reconnect communities with the shared industrial, cultural, and migratory heritage of the Glamorganshire Canal. By retracing the canal's path from Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff, we will celebrate the canal's role in shaping South Wales through immigration, trade, and cultural-exchange. Our goal is to engage diverse communities—especially in Merthyr, Abercynon, Pontypridd, Taffs Well, and Butetown—through creative projects that blend Welsh and Caribbean traditions, highlighting the legacy of carnival and procession. By combining music, dance, and storytelling, we will empower participants to explore local history and identity, strengthen community pride, and foster intergenerational and intercultural understanding. The project will culminate in an annual carnival in Butetown, honouring one of Britain’s oldest multicultural communities. Ultimately, we seek to inspire a deeper appreciation of a shared heritage that has too often been forgotten, while celebrating the vibrant cultural contributions of immigrant communities
