Culture And Memory

Carnival of Cultures - Many Voices One City.

Carnival of Cultures - Many Voices, One City. Carnival of Cultures will document, celebrate, and safeguard the intangible heritage of Edinburgh’s global majority communities through the leadership of young people. Youth Ambassadors (aged 16-24) will train as Cultural Heritage Coordinators to research, record, and interpret diverse migration stories, carnival traditions, and cultural practices. Working with community elders, they will capture oral histories and digital assets, then co-curate exhibitions, films, podcasts, costumes and performances shared in schools, community venues, and within Edinburgh Festival Carnival. Acting as peer educators, our ambassadors will lead creative workshops in drumming, dance, costume, and storytelling, engaging wider youth audiences in exploring heritage concepts, cultural identity and belonging. The project will produce at least 50 oral histories, 300 digital outputs, and a youth-led heritage archive and teaching pack. It will build confidence, leadership, and pride, ensuring Edinburgh’s multicultural heritages are recognised, celebrated, and sustained for future generations.
