Nature And Landscape

Chalk Lines: Linking habitats and species across Surrey Hills

Buglife’s ‘Chalk Lines’ will restore and reconnect 30 hectares (ha) of chalk grassland habitat within the Surrey Hills National Landscape (a habitat of principal importance for biodiversity conservation in England). The project will also restore populations of seven threatened invertebrate species: Adonis Blue, Straw Belle, Shining Pot Beetle, Hazel Pot Beetle, Red-tailed Mason Bee, Armed Nomad Bee and Large Scabious Mining Bee, some of which are recorded from only a single/handful of sites in Surrey. Detailed surveys for these species will expand our knowledge of current populations and species ecology enabling bespoke habitat interventions. Ten-year management plans will ensure longer-term recovery of the target species. Project activities will reconnect people from the urban centres of Guildford, Dorking and Leatherhead to the special landscape of the North Downs. Activities for care home residents and the prison population at HMP Send will expand the range of people engaged with Surrey’s natural heritage.
