Chalk Streams in the City

Chalk streams are England’s rainforests—crystal-clear, nutrient-rich sanctuaries teeming with life. These rare ecosystems, with only about 220 globally, are predominantly found in England. Urban chalk streams are even rarer jewels, with fewer than ten worldwide. The Chalk Streams in the City project will revitalise four urban chalk streams in London, transforming them into thriving ecosystems. Through innovative restoration visions and community-driven volunteer activities, the project will enhance habitats for species like brown trout and water voles. Engaging local communities is at the heart of this initiative; educational programmes for schools, citizen science training, and outreach events will connect thousands of people with these rare natural treasures. Partnering with Wild in the City, the project will connect People of Colour with nature, promoting inclusivity and diversity in environmental stewardship. By fostering a deep sense of stewardship, SERT will improve the health of these streams and inspire long-term community protection.
