Culture And Memory

Chance (working title)

Through this project, Black Country Touring (BCT) aims to achieve four key outcomes: Reclaim a Global Legacy: Using our established model of site-responsive theatre, we will shine a light on the iconic Chances Glassworks, transforming it from a derelict landmark into a source of civic pride. We want residents to recognise Smethwick as a global hub of innovation that lit the world’s coastlines. Improve access to local heritage: We aim to reach families and young people in areas of high deprivation who are traditionally excluded from engaging with heritage. By touring community spaces, we will make heritage accessible, sensory, and relevant. We will present the human narratives of the Chance workforce, including migration and working-class experiences, preserving them for future generations. By building an engaged heritage audience now, we provide the community support necessary for the successful long-term redevelopment of the Chances site.
