Chilton: Our People, Our Place, Our Heritage

Vision: Save the physical and intangible cultural heritage of Chilton and Windlestone for the benefit of future generations. Mission: To preserve and enhance one of the town's oldest buildings, the miner’s welfare pavilion and, through the creation of a digital and physical archive, establish a community heritage centre, providing a sustainable solution to honouring and preserving Chilton’s heritage, fulfilling contemporary demands through the reimagining of a historic space ensuring it remains active and relevant in the modern cultural landscape. Objectives: Create a digital and physical archive through the collection of artifacts, printed, film and audio material. Restore and repurpose the pavilion to showcase the story of our town, utilising the archive. Encourage engagement, community cohesion and accessibility of our town’s environmental heritage through the creation of an interactive trail Ensure organisational sustainability through capacity building and developing collaborations to support and benefit from the growing heritage tourism of South Durham.
