The Sommerfeld Spitfire

Through the creation of a Commemorative Spitfire sculpture our project will achieve the following: Celebrate the unique, and nationally important ,aviation heritage of the Montrose Area Commemorate the sacrifice of the Airmen that lost their lives serving from Montrose Air Station in both world wars. Preserve, display and incorporate unique physical heritage that is due to be entirely removed from its original siting without any current plans for its preservation. Involve local young people in understanding, celebrating and valuing their heritage through immersing them its historical importance both locally and nationally. Promote the heritage work of the Montrose Air Station Museum and attract support from other volunteer groups and individuals, creating stronger ties to the local community across generations. Teach young people traditional and modern metalworking skills that have direct relevance to the preservation of the heritage and use them to fabricate the sculpture while involving them in its design.
