Culture And Memory
The CIVIC150 programme will reconnect Barnsley Civic with its rich historic narrative and remind the communities of Barnsley of their central role in its shared story. The two-year Birthday celebration will include talks, exhibitions and performances highlighting the hidden histories of fifteen decades. A large-scale public donation campaign will uncover lost heritage, telling the story of Barnsley through the lens of its treasured Civic Hall. Targeted capital investment will pull back modern grey carpets to reveal the original 1877 tiles beneath. Building heritage research will inform a decorative revival, splashing much needed colour across our white walls. Improved entrance doors, and the reopening of our grand double staircase, will deliver better heritage access, while reducing energy usage. At the end of the programme Barnsley Civic will be reconnected with its social and architectural history, and once more look and feel like the emotional and cultural heart of this great town.
