Nature And Landscape

#COED6 Growth for Good Blackmill Woods

TWIG funding will enable the restoration and sustainable management of Blackmill Woodland through native planting, thinning, and improved ecological connectivity. A woodland management plan will guide the work, which includes creating access paths, seating, interpretation boards, and a digital educational trail for schools and community groups. A tree nursery using locally collected seeds and research into a rare oak species will further enhance biodiversity. The project meets all six national forest outcomes and aligns with UK Forestry Standards. It will reconnect local residents, especially older generations, with a cherished natural space, once a childhood playground. Strong community interest has already emerged, and a Friends of Blackmill Woodland group will be formed to support events and workshops, supported by Valleys to Coast staff. Overall, the initiative offers wide-ranging benefits: ecological restoration, improved public access, enhanced wellbeing, and educational opportunities, transforming the woodland into a vibrant, inclusive space for nature and community.
