Guided by the family vison, consultation with woodland stakeholders, and the Good Practice Requirements of the UKFS, the funding will be used to remove regenerating Sitka spruce to promote the growth of existing native broadleaves, start the process of rewetting, increase the diversity age structure, promoting biodiversity. Public access will be made more inclusive and rewarding. A wider range of volunteer opportunities and training will enhance community involvement. There will be positive impacts on the wider landscape through increasing water-retention, linking to nearby sensitive habitats and providing habitat for priority species. A biochar production pilot will contribute to the economic sustainability of the woodland. The potential for successional sustainability beyond the current tenure through long term nature recovery agreements will be investigated. The legacy of the project will be a well-managed resilient woodland embedded in the community. By promoting the National Forest network locally, Pencoedtop will link to neighbouring habitats.
