Community: Becoming Black and British.

We hope to inspire and inform people about the contributions of Black British community organisations, whose valuable work lacks physical documentation and risks being lost. This heritage has often gone unrecorded due to limited preservation resources, and decades of being undervalued by wider British institutions and the media. Our project will capture our heritage through intergenerational dialogues, enabling young people to appreciate past struggles to achieve the freedom they have today. Participants will gain digital documentary-making skills by working with industry experts to collect and curate local community stories in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, and Liverpool. To ensure its legacy, the materials will be archived in museums and digital spaces. It will also reach 275+ learning partners, community organisations, and libraries. Culminating, in 2027, with a broadcast-quality documentary marking 220 years since the passing of the Slave Trade Act, platforming Black British voices and their positive contributions to UK society.
