Copy That – The Revolution in Photomechanical Printing

We aim to deliver an inspirational, absorbing series of original, participative and heritage events/activities/talks and exhibition to reveal the life and work of the remarkable inventor, printing pioneer, artist and photographer, Karel Klic. He was the first person to mechanize and democratize the means of fine art reproduction. His Lancashire-invented intaglio rotogravure - a photo-mechanical process for accurate copying and multi-copying -also revolutionised the printing of pictures in the press, in books and for home decoration. The multi-faceted heritage project marks 100 years since the death of Karel Klic in 1926 and will create a legacy of his groundbreaking achievement by researching, gathering and presenting his wide-ranging work as a photographer, caricaturist, artist and inventor. Participants will learn about Klic’s revolutionary breakthrough work by exploring varied printing/copying techniques and creating some artworks for the exhibition alongside his works.
