’Cripping Culture: a Journey into Disability Arts Heritage’ will research and reveal the achievements of the disabled artists and activists who put disability rights on the map from the late 1970s onwards. (Cripping, like queering, uses a reclaimed word to apply a disability lens to culture). Through mass community participation we will capture memories about elders and changemakers who established disability arts as a cornerstone of socially engaged practice and transformed the UK’s arts and culture landscape. From interviews, research, and work to publish our own archive, an interactive digital timeline will provide extensive interpretation for people to engage with the heritage. This will safeguard the heritage of the Disability Arts movement, fill gaps in existing knowledge, enable generations of disabled people to connect with their heritage, and increase public understanding of the journeys of artists and activists who have campaigned for the human rights of disabled people.
