Our natural heritage is of key importance to us here in the Glenkens in remote-rural SW Scotland. We are situated in a UNESCO Biosphere due to the uniqueness of our landscapes, yet they are changing very rapidly. Our cultural heritage is also highly valued. From the Covenanters to the Galloway Hoard to 20th century rural living, our heritage is celebrated and revered – but is at risk from volunteer fatigue and the passage of time. At the Glenkens Community and Arts Trust, we have a 17-year track record of weaving together Arts, Community and Heritage so that people can better connect to the heritage of the Glenkens. Through ‘Cultural Glenkens’ we want to amplify the work of our amazing volunteers, catalyse new engagement projects and better record our heritage. We also want to support our young people through a programme of internships, supporting the sustainability of our modern rural community.
