Cumbria Seed Bank Project
A new seed bank will preserve the genetic diversity of native plant species. This pilot project to experiment with the introduction of harder to establish species that are missing from our grasslands will inform future work to safeguard vulnerable populations of plant species in Cumbria. A suite of grassland sites in the southern Lake District will be richer in species diversity; supporting plants including globeflower, spignel and melancholy thistle that are currently rare across Cumbria. The techniques required to propagate these species will be better understood and shared. There will be a larger pool of skilled volunteer surveyors, with a significant increase in the number of young volunteers. The shortage of botanical skills will have been addressed. Opportunities for young people to participate in conservation work parties, weekend volunteer sessions, training courses and a Young Environmental Leaders residential will lead to increased confidence and potential in this group.
