Cycling Through Time-Manchester’s Cycling Heritage in the 1800s

MaxTrax CIC’s "Cycling Through Time" project aims to preserve and celebrate Openshaw’s 1800s cycling heritage, a vital part of Manchester’s industrial and social history. Through archival research, oral histories, 12 workshops, exhibitions, and a community cycling festival, we will engage 500 residents, particularly young people and disadvantaged groups, to foster pride and cohesion. We'll safeguard this at-risk heritage from urban development and fading memories by digitizing 50 records, collecting 20 stories, and mapping historical routes. The project promotes sustainable transport, encouraging cycling to reduce carbon emissions, and ensures inclusivity with accessible events and digital outputs. Collaborating with Manchester Museum, Openshaw Library, and local schools will create a lasting legacy, enhancing MaxTrax’s capacity to deliver community-driven initiatives. This 16-month project will reconnect Openshaw with its past, inspiring future generations to value their heritage and embrace greener living.
