Culture And Memory

Dalston Moves: Music, Culture & Defiance" (1980s–2000s)" a celebration of Dalston’s rich heritage and its lasting impact on London’s social and political landscape.

Future Hackney is celebrating and preserving Dalston’s vibrant heritage of music, nightlife and activism from the 1980s to the 2000s. Through interviews, photography and storytelling, we will connect past and present generations, focusing on the experiences of Queer, Black, working class and artistic communities. We will record ten oral histories and gather fifteen reminiscences, co-create documentary images and build engaging digital platforms. Community workshops will include darkroom photography and a podcast with the Museum of Youth Culture featuring local young people. The project will produce outdoor and indoor exhibitions, alongside talks, heritage activities, public events and an online presence. In partnership with Hackney Museum and Archives, Museum of Youth Culture, Red Cross Dalston, Bootstrap, Mediorite and Vogue Fabrics, our work will empower communities to reclaim marginalised histories and shape Dalston’s cultural legacy. Funding will help us grow independently and secure long-term support to deliver inclusive visual arts and heritage projects.
