Dialect and Heritage: More than Words

Woodlouse or slater? Cheesy bug or chucky pig? Whichever you choose, your dialect is more than words: it is rooted in where you come from, work and live. Our project will enhance people’s sense of belonging and connection to each other and the places important to them, by promoting understanding of this priceless, ‘at risk’ intangible heritage that we carry within us. With partners across the country, our ambitious programme – including events, exhibitions, creative activities, volunteering and an interactive website – will enable people (particularly those who feel socially or physically isolated) to take part in (and do!) dialect research, saving and sharing their heritage in ways that are fun, engaging and meaningful. We will stimulate intergenerational conversations, foster interaction between urban and rural communities, promote wellbeing, and embed skills and resilience in the heritage sector to leave a lasting legacy for everyone: individuals, Lottery players, our partners and their communities.
