Dockside Stories

Dockside Stories is a community-driven heritage project exploring Belfast’s history of trade, migration, and cultural exchange through its port. By collaborating with local communities, historians, artists, and volunteers, the project will uncover diverse narratives that have shaped the city's identity. Through oral histories, digital storytelling, a pop-up museum, and educational initiatives, the project brings to life the experiences of merchants, migrants, and workers who contributed to Belfast’s maritime heritage. Using creative practices and auto-ethnography, it examines how the port facilitated migration and fostered cultural diversity. The project will explore Belfast's evolution as a merchant city with commodities like tea, linen, and tobacco, the community heritage of Sailortown, Little Italy, and the Half Bap, historical links to enslavement and the port’s role in rum and sugarcane trade, and migration stories of communities including Italian, Jewish, Indian,and Vietnamese groups
