Culture And Memory
Doncaster on Stage: Uncovering 250 Years of Theatre in Doncaster
We want to uncover, explore and celebrate the largely forgotten heritage of theatre in Doncaster, tracing its story from the opening of the city’s first theatre 250 years ago to the present day. By researching overlooked histories and gathering new information, insights and perspectives, we aim to shine a light on the richness&diversity of Doncaster’s theatrical past and highlight the enduring role that performance has played in bringing communities together and fostering civic pride. Our work will culminate in a creative reimagining of Doncaster’s performance heritage: a series of scenes inspired by real people, historic events&lived experience. This collaborative artistic response will bring people from different backgrounds together to explore, understand&celebrate the city’s cultural heritage. This project will strengthen knowledge of local history in Doncaster, and by capturing memories and finding in the local archive we'll ensure the project finding&exploration will serve as a historical legacy to inspire&inform future generations.
