Durham Carpet Factory

Our project explores how we were shaped by industry, community and global connections at Durham Carpet Factory. Building on our Durham Ice Rink project, this work will use our community-curated approach, with consultation, exhibitions and oral history placing lived experience at the centre of interpretation. We will work with archived material, alongside contemporary voices and artefacts, to create a film and exhibition that is accessible and meaningful to local people. The project also considers the Riverside’s historic role as a social hub, encouraging reflection on what has been lost through deindustrialisation, and how heritage could shape a more connected future. The findings about the loss of our creative industry in the city centre will inform creative responses to both the heritage and city, with an exploration of the riverside as it currently stands. We want to use this project to explore who we are and how our city represents us.
