Everyday Lives in Extraordinary Times: Haltwhistle’s Industrial and Wartime Past

The social and community history of Haltwhistle's industrial and wartime heritage is disappearing. People who worked in factories, mines, quarries and railways are ageing. Their stories of Hadrian Paints, Kilfrost, the Prisoner of War camp at Featherstone exist mainly in memory. Once they're gone, that knowledge dies with them. We're bringing young people and older residents together to record these voices while we still can. Through oral histories, family photographs, and archival research, we'll document working lives that shaped Haltwhistle but were often not officially recorded. We'll create digital stories, a community exhibition, and an online archive. The legacy is straightforward: Haltwhistle's heritage preserved in accessible, engaging form. Future generations will understand what their heritage is, why those voices mattered, and how ordinary people's labour connected the town to national and international events. This documentation becomes part of the foundations for the Heritage Centre the community wants to build.
