Exploring industrial and natural heritage in north Nottinghamshire through creative practice

Working with 10 young people (YP) aged 16-19 attending REAL Education, an alternative provision (AP), engaging them with local history through exploration of the conflicting role of mining and natural heritage in Nottinghamshire through field research, creative practices, and co-creation of a visual book. Students will learn about the role of archival images and visual culture in our lives through generations, examining the use of photography for sharing histories and visual knowledge to increase understanding of preservation and documentation of heritage. Working with heritage professionals and creative practitioners, students will have high-quality learning experiences and outcomes, increasing the connection and pride with the heritage of their local area through facilitating discussion on the impact of the mining industry in Nottinghamshire in terms of society, economy, nature, class. The coproduction and distribution of the accessible visual book will provide greater awareness of local heritage to more audiences outside of the project.
