Flagship Peatlands

Peatlands are a Cinderella habitat - degraded and overlooked - walked through rather than to. Flagship Peatlands will address this by helping people to understand, value and enjoy these often inaccessible and austere, but nonetheless beautiful places. Through a programme of restoration, access improvements and innovative activities we will inspire people to engage more actively with these habitats thereby raising awareness of their importance for biodiversity and climate change mitigation. Three broad themes of celebrating, learning and enhancing will provide the framework to our project. Flagship Peatlands is a collaborative project, working with partners across Cumbria whilst using our reserves at Skiddaw Forest and Foulshaw Moss as hubs from which wider celebration, education and restoration activities will radiate. Collaborative working will enhance capability and capacity across the peatland restoration ‘sector’ through a reinvigorated Cumbria Peat Partnership and improved Green Finance capacity, with a pipeline of peatland projects for potential investors.
