From Bosnia To Britain - Building Communities

The Bosnian war (1992-1995) saw tens of thousands – Christian and Muslim - flee their home, with over 11,000 settling in Britain. These refugees now hold joint citizenship, and their children and children’s children consider this country their home. Amongst our community there is a wealth of memories – the war zones and concentration camps, travelling to Britian, settling here, and then struggling to reconcile the past whilst building a new life for the future. The refugees’ memories have significance as a record of these momentous events, but also in providing lessons for refugee integration in the future. We hope that by collecting and sharing individual and collective histories of the Bosnian diaspora in the UK we will engender a greater understanding and acceptance of the needs and wants of migrants and refugees amongst everyone that engages with our project, whilst helping to heal the hidden traumas of our community.
